CHARACTER NAME: Kaladin CHARACTER AGE: 20 Rosharan years (22 Earth years) CANON:The Stormlight Archive CANON POINT: Oathbringer: Chapter 69 CRAU INFO: N/A
SUITABILITY:
Trained as a soldier and surgeon, Kaladin is well-suited to and experienced with frontline combat and medical intervention. He's highly adaptable in wartime environments as a natural talent with the spear, learning to wield pole weapons as a child until he was old—and pressured—enough to join border conflicts. He was helped along into this mindset by being born Alethi, natives to the country of Alethkar known for their militancy and aggression. Becoming a surgeon is a family career; he assisted his father from a young age and was expected to attend school for it. Because of this, his knowledge of triage, treatment, and medicine is vast. Against the monsters' intent to destroy Japan, he will be an asset both in a direct fight and in offering relief to his teammates and civilians.
What he's seen for a young man of twenty is plenty. Most of his life has been a disappointment, both to him and to figures who are—or were, in many cases—important to him. After joining the army with his brother, who was drafted, he lost him and his comrades; he was betrayed by his commanding officer and forced into slavery. A year of his life was spent doing harmful work for bad people before he was emancipated, and during this time, he witnessed more deaths than he was capable of coping with. He became a leader, a captain, and a Knight Radiant, all within a short period of time. While he's still reeling from the added responsibilities, his management of them has gone as well as expected.
It's a trial by fire. With LILITH's added duties, he'll undoubtedly struggle and require help from his teammates, but once he knows he can rely on them, too, working for the sake of Neo Tokyo—and eventually going home—will become second nature.
Kaladin has fought monsters before, both literal and not. He's fought and killed men, other peoples, and a creature many times his size. He has a natural fighting spirit, though it manifests only because of his desire to protect and defend. He excels both on teams and as a solo combatant, and his willingness in Synflux to do his duty for LILITH will only be outweighed by the needs of his comrades.
PERSONALITY TRAITS:
⤷ Honourable ⤷ Practical ⤷ Passionate ⤷ Willful
⤷ Depressed ⤷ Distrustful ⤷ Obstinate ⤷ Curmudgeonly (Kaladin's an 80-year-old at heart)
MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE Kaladin was trained under his father to become a surgeon. He has advanced knowledge in and experience with the following: ⤷ Diagnosing and treating medical conditions ⤷ Preoperative, operative, and postoperative care ⤷ Identifying and using medicinal reagents (plants, animals, etc.) ⤷ Researching and concocting remedies ⤷ Having a shockingly decent bedside manner
SPEARMANSHIP After being passed a wooden staff as a child, Kaladin thought it felt "right." He became proficient with spears after joining the army, and when he wields one, his motions are dance-like. His mastery has taught him the following: ⤷ How to train new spearmen ⤷ Thrusting and sweeping manoeuvres ⤷ Military formations ⤷ Pole vaulting
SURGEBINDING Due to a bond Kaladin forged with a spren named Sylphrena, he can breathe in and utilize Stormlight, energy from his planet's storms. During storms (extended to Neo Tokyo storms with mod approval), his Light is constantly replenished; however, on a clear day, he uses the finite Light contained within spheres—glass beads containing fragments of absorptive gemstones, also currency—to access his abilities. Stormlight not only enhances his strength, speed, agility, durability, stamina, and healing to superhuman levels but allows him to employ Surges specific to an order of knights called the Windrunners. Examples of these Surges—known as Adhesion and Gravitation, simplified by Kaladin as the "Three Lashings, outlined below: ⤷ Sticking objects together with Adhesion ⤷ Bonding rocks to walls to create ladders ⤷ Disarming opponents by pulling their weapons with his own after making contact ⤷ Bonding people to surfaces ⤷ Manipulating Gravitation to make an object or person fall in a different direction ⤷ He can fly by Lashing himself into the air and in a direction ⤷ Transporting people over long distances by Lashing them in a direction ⤷ Infusing an object and commanding it to attract a specific other object ⤷ Attract arrows being shot at him ⤷ Infusing a shield he is carrying to draw an entire volley of arrows
SHARDBLADE Kaladin's aforementioned bond with Syl enables her to change into a shapeshifting weapon called a Shardblade—or "Sylblade" when he's wielding her specifically. When a living being is struck with a Shardblade, it will not be "cut" but passed through. This can leave limbs visually intact but permanently unusable or instantly kill someone hit in a vital area (read: head, neck, chest). Syl has several forms she can change into for Kaladin. A few examples: ⤷ Sword ⤷ Spear ⤷ Shield ⤷ Hammer ⤷ It's implied that she can turn into mundane objects like mirrors, but this she considers to be a gross misuse of her talents
NERFED POWERS: His summoned blade can no longer "sever" (permanently deaden) limbs, or instantly kill someone struck in a vital area.
PERSONAL ITEM: A bag of gemstones called Spheres. They glow, and breathing in their light enables him to use his abilities. This will be a finite resource, but they can regenerate in storms. ALTERNATE IDENTITY: Calvin Wero, paramedic. SAMPLES:Paragraph thread and network thread.
Player: Froot Character Name: Kaladin Character Series: The Stormlight Archive New Canon Point: Rhythm of War, Chapter 8. Notes: I'm now just updating as I read further omg... I'm dying...
At this canon point, Kaladin has experienced new losses that have pushed him further into emotional instability. He's struggling actively with depression and PTSD, and his relationships are being damaged by it. While he assisted in bringing about the death of Amaram, an old enemy who branded him a slave, he also ran into an old friend, Moash, who betrayed him in the previous books.
With help, however, he's ensured the safety of his parents, Lirin and Hesina, and his little brother, Oroden. This will help him assist LILITH more effectively, though he'll suffer from bouts of malaise without external assistance from friends. If therapy is introduced, he might consider discussing his hang-ups with the doctors on base.
Kaladin has the same powers (he's just more adept with them), with one exception:
As a Knight Radiant, he can promote people to "squires," effectively sharing his power with them when they're close enough friends/comrades. I'll nerf this to one person at a time and make it a temporary state, as he already has extremely limited resources (only so many spheres to draw Stormlight from, etc.) and won't want to share them. I doubt this use of his power will come up often—if at all. It'd solely be for CR-building purposes... or funny shit.
