They promised each other they'd use this time to live. Kaladin swore an Oath to Noctis to try because he wanted to know what being free felt like. Not physically, not after being emancipated on the Shattered Plains by Dalinar, but mentally. Not unburdened, but less burdened. Kaladin's never met a man so committed to relieving the pressure of the past simply by persisting—against all of life's disappointments—to be him.

Why does that set his face on fire, envisioning exactly how Kaladin would've said it with that intense expression on his face and passion in his eyes? He'd reassured him once that they could be themselves with each other, in whatever form they took on that day. The Noctis that fights hard and hates to lose. The Noctis that's competent and listens to the troubles of others. But also, and more critically, the Noctis that struggles to keep a clean room. The Noctis who sometimes likes to hide from the world.
Kaladin makes that okay. He wants to make it okay for him in return.
To be weak, with him, in private. Protected and safe, just them. ]
